Compliance documents for roofers

Generate these documents in under 30 seconds from your project details.

RAMS

Combined risk assessment and method statement covering roof access, edge protection, materials handling, and weather conditions.

Required by principal contractors before any roofing work begins on site.

Risk Assessment

Identifies roof-specific hazards: falls from height, fragile surfaces, manual handling of materials, hot works for felt roofing, and weather exposure.

Legal requirement under HASAWA 1974 and the Management Regulations 1999.

Method Statement

Step-by-step safe system of work for the roofing project, including access arrangements, sequence of works, and emergency procedures.

Expected on every commercial and multi-contractor project.

Building Regs Compliance Certificate

Evidence that notifiable roof work complies with Building Regulations, issued via CompetentRoofer self-certification or Building Control sign-off.

Required for notifiable roof work including re-roofing and thermal upgrades.

Key regulations for roofers

Our templates are built around these requirements so your documents are compliant from the start.

Building Regulations Part L

Sets thermal performance standards for roof renovations and new builds. Roof replacements involving more than 50% of the area trigger thermal element upgrade requirements.

Work at Height Regulations 2005

Require a risk assessment for all work at height, proper planning, and use of appropriate equipment. Falls from roofs remain one of the leading causes of construction fatalities.

BS 5534

The British Standard for slating and tiling — covers fixing specifications, wind load calculations, underlay requirements, and minimum pitch guidance for pitched roof coverings.

CDM 2015

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations apply to all roofing projects. Contractors must plan, manage, and monitor work to ensure health and safety.

Frequently asked questions

Do roofers need RAMS?

Yes. Under CDM 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, all roofing contractors must have a risk assessment. Principal contractors and main contractors will require full RAMS before allowing access to site. Even for domestic work, a risk assessment is a legal requirement.

When does roof work need Building Control notification?

Re-roofing more than 50% of the roof area, or any work that affects the thermal element, triggers Building Regulations Part L. If you are registered with CompetentRoofer (NFRC scheme), you can self-certify. Otherwise, you must notify Building Control before work starts.

What is CompetentRoofer?

CompetentRoofer is the NFRC Competent Person Scheme that allows registered roofing contractors to self-certify notifiable roof work under Building Regulations in England and Wales. It avoids the need for a separate Building Control application, saving time and cost for both the contractor and the client.

What fall protection is required for roof work?

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require a hierarchy of control: avoid work at height where possible, use platforms with edge protection (scaffolding, MEWP), then personal fall protection (harnesses) as a last resort. Fragile roof surfaces need additional controls including crawling boards and warning signage. A rescue plan must be in place before work begins.
